What is Montessori?
Montessori is a child-centered method of education that was created by Dr. Maria Montessori in Italy over a century ago. The developmental method allows for an individually-based curriculum that aids the whole child to develop skills for life. The method promotes the development of self-regulation, independence, critical thinking skills, social fluency and a strong culture of learning.

What is Leelanau Montessori?
Leelanau Montessori is a public charter school serving children ages 1-12 years old in Lake Leelanau, Michigan. We are located on 4 acres in the heart of Leelanau County. The school is celebrating the 35th year of Montessori in Leelanau County and LMPSA's 19th year. Leelanau Montessori educates the whole child in a prepared Montessori environment and values community, the Montessori method and fiscal health to best serve the children, families and staff who choose the school. We have enjoyed long-time staff and families, natural settings, extensive parent involvement and distinguished alumni over our decades of delivering educational services. We are a welcoming community! How do I schedule a visit, observation or tour?

What is the application and enrollment process for my child?
​After initial contact with the school, a classroom observation is scheduled for the parent/guardian. This takes approximately one hour and is only for adults. Classroom observation provides an insight into the Montessori Method and allows for sharing of information prior to enrollment. After an application is completed and returned to the school, the school will notify you of your child’s admission. Once your child has been admitted, the office will provide relevant paperwork and direction leading to first connections with your child’s guide. During the enrollment process, there are several opportunities for the parent/guardian and child to build a relationship with school faculty. Leelanau Montessori Public School Academy provides a home visit for children six and under. Classroom visits are part of the start of school procedures for all ages. ​

How much does it cost?
Leelanau Montessori provides a Kindergarten through Sixth grade program for no cost. Children ages 1-4 attend based on tuition. See the application for tuition rates per day.

Do you have openings?
Leelanau Montessori enrolls children year round, provided that there is space. We accept applications year-round. Open enrollment begins in the beginning of March for the following school year. A lottery is held if there is less space than applicants. Your child’s enrollment status is typically determined by June 1st in the case that a lottery is required.

How old does your child have to be to start?
We serve children beginning at 15 months.

What are the programs offered?
Leelanau Montessori has a Toddler, Primary and Elementary program.  The curriculum includes language, mathematics, peace education, culture and geography, art, music, science, health and wellness and everyday living skills. We also host an after school program and summer sessions.

What do parents do as partners in their child’s education?
There are many ways that parents engage, advocate and advance the education of their child and the mission of the school. Serving on committees, teams and classroom cohorts might be a way to get involved, though there are simple and common ways like providing items for classroom activities, reading to children or volunteering at a work-bee. Parents are encouraged and expected to be involved regularly with the life of the school.  Parent-teacher relationships are a two way touchpoint that promotes optimal development and school success.
